Mosquitoes are more than just a nuisance. They can spread a huge number of diseases. In fact, the Aedes Aegypti mosquito is said to be the world’s most dangerous animal!

The diseases carried by this tiny insect are particularly dangerous to older people and babies. If you already have an issue with them then it’s time to call in the exterminators.

But, if you are interested in using home remedies to prevent the mosquitoes from invading your home and yard, there are several methods which you can try:

Planting

Mosquitoes do not like the scent of marigolds, rosemary or even catnip! Plant some of these near the entrances to your home and even keep some potted ones in your house.

You don’t need a huge number of plants; their smell is quite noticeable to a mosquito!

It is worth noting that planting these along the perimeter of your land will have a limited effect unless your yard is exceptionally small.

Fabric Softener Dryer Sheets

If you find that the mosquitoes are particularly attracted to you then you can hang a couple of these dryer sheets to your clothes when outside.

Again, it is the aroma they give off which will keep the mosquitoes away.

Lemon Eucalyptus Oil

You can purchase this in most health stores or you can make it at home by squeezing one lemon to 5 drops of eucalyptus oil.

Put it into a spray body and spray yourself; again the scent will keep the mosquitoes away.

Citronella

This is another smell that mosquitoes despise. All you need to do is have a few citronella candles burning while you sit outside and the mosquitoes will stay well away!

Standing Water

If you speak to a professional they will immediately evaluate your home and look for any standing water.

This is the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. Eliminate standing water from your home and yard and you’ll deprive the mosquitoes off a place to breed. They will go elsewhere.

Mosquito Netting

This is very common in Africa where mosquitoes are a huge problem. The holes are too small for mosquitoes to get through but you can still see through it.

Hang it across your doorways and windows to stop them coming into your home.

You can even make an outside enclosure to safely enjoy your yard at any time of the day.

Coffee Grounds

If you do locate any stagnant water at your home sprinkle some coffee grounds into it. The coffee will force any mosquito eggs to the surface where they will not have any oxygen and die before they can hatch.

Make A Trap

All you need is a plastic bottle with the top cut off. Then add some brown sugar to hot water; allowing it to dissolve.

Once it has cooled pour it into the bottle and add a spoon of yeast. Then insert the cut top into the lower part of the bottle; it must be upside down.

This creates a delightful scent for the mosquitoes and a funnel to direct them in. Make sure the upside down bottle opening is not in the sugar water.

The mosquitoes will actually drown in the water. All you need to do is discard it after two weeks and create a new solution!

There are hundreds of other homemade remedies to try. But, you should always contact the professionals if you have a lot of mosquitoes. They can help you eliminate the problem.
